Kampot Recap

It turned out to be a short but sweet trip to Kampot. When I arrived, my friends who had gone to Kampot the day before were still coming down off the mountain. When they arrived, we ate at a restaurant called Epic Arts, which employs and welcomes deaf and disabled people. The food was delicious and it was a very cool place.

Next we took a lengthy but refreshing (in that "it's nice to sweat a lot every once in a while" way) trek to our bungalow that was a few kilos out of town.

We made it! Colin and Aaron in the loft.
Our very own bungalow.

Girls bedroom downstairs, boys upstairs.

The bungalow next door. They had the hammock version.

The first thing we did was take a dip in the inviting river. Some guests were already lounging on the floating structure. We're not 100% sure what it's for, but we think they might put up a sheet and convert it to a projector screen for movies. Would have loved to experience that!

Wasn't hard to decide we needed to join them, especially after a sweaty trek there.
Most were American expats.
Check out the jungly background!
The facilities were a mix between funky and incredibly detailed. For example, in our bungalow, the floor was concrete, the walls didn't even continue to the ground (thankfully they provided bug nets), and I was slightly startled during the night when I heard rustling right on the other side of the wall. Turns out it was a chicken. Along with the communal bathrooms, it was rather like glorified camping!

On the other hand, the details of the common area were incredibly well done. I forgot to snap photos of some of the touches like the bamboo glassware holder over the bar.

You can barely make it out in this picture. Also note the coconut lights hanging above the bar.
We were promised Klang beer would make us Strong Like Bull, and after 3 we could wrestle alligators. The gators turned out to be too chicken to show up.
It was really cool being so close to the water.
Kampot tends to be a sleepy town. This quiet, relaxed bungalow definitely reflected that.
Off the deck, straight into water.

If you dropped anything through those slats, it'd fall and get wet. That's how "on the water" we were. I made sure to hold onto my phone very tightly.
The kayak was the designated beer-fetcher for the swimmers. Those midwesterners sure are nice! He went to UW Madison, so we chatted about our favorite haunts there.
We may have picked up a brew for our troubles as well. Brews in the basket of a police bike? Felt right.
Bikin' drinkin's!!! Litrally.
We got to take one last swim in the river before taking off. One last shot of our cool bungalow from the water.
Looks pretty jungly, no?
Fishy friends hanging out on the floating structure with us. Yay for underwater cameras!

Slightly less fishy friends.
Next weekend, we're staying in town to regroup, go to the local markets, and celebrate St. Paddy's Day. Trying to get a non-weekend post out to the "interwebs" as well. Cheers from Cambodia!

  1. I was beginning to wonder if Cambodia had a work week, or if it was just weekends strung together over there. Your weekends seem awesome!
I like the bikin' drinkin' and your police bike. Are the bugs really bad during the day too?
